Why Functional Training Does Not Work and What To Do Instead

Functional training is a popular thing right now and over the last 2-3 years it still seems to be gaining momentum. You might have F45 in mind here but they didn’t invent the term. Before F45 there was crossfit, before crossfit there was pump class and before pump class it wasn’t branded. There was just your average gym goer who decided to do a workout of 20 push ups, 20 lunges, 20 squats and 1 minute of rowing and threw it into a circuit because it increased cardio and allowed them to get more done in less time.

How the fitness industry helps you fail - you never do the same workout twice

How the fitness industry helps you fail - you never do the same workout twice

Something that’s been bothering me for a while in fitness marketing is the “never do the same workout twice” marketing I’ve been seeing pop up in different mainstream brands (ahem, F45).

This annoys me because it’s teaching people the wrong way to think about training.

The best workout to prep for the slopes

The best workout to prep for the slopes

If you look at what’s involved in skiing there are a few things you can train for:

  1. Balance and coordination
  2. Strength
  3. Endurance
  4. Injury minimisation/bulletproof your body

The good news is with an intelligent program you don’t have to think about or train these physical abilities separately. The right exercises and program will train all abilities simultaneously.

Boiiis just wanna be swole

Boiiis just wanna be swole

I want to offer all my skinny boiiiis out there the simplest, most straight forward and effective advice on how to add some thick, masculine, glorious musculature to your frame.

If you weigh under 80kg this is the most important thing you can do (because until then you are not considered an adult). Also growing out of clothing, getting thick and being able to throw your girlfriend around is crazy fun.

And if you don’t have a girlfriend you definitely 100% will after this program.

Nailing your reps and sets - here's why this is how you progress in your training

Nailing your reps and sets - here's why this is how you progress in your training

In this blog I want to educate you a little more on how to create a balanced workout and program.

In the last blog we focused on the four big movements: squat, hip hinge, press and pull. At 100Strong in Manly, we believe that repetitions and sets are just as important.

Why?

Why burpees are a waste of time and fancy exercises are a joke

Why burpees are a waste of time and fancy exercises are a joke

There are fancy looking exercises you see all over Instagram that get all the boys and gals excited. They look great but tend to leave fitness pros and OG coaches unimpressed.

Fancy looking doesn’t mean effective.

Most of the fancy looking exercises I’m thinking of can be learned in five minutes.

If your goal is to move around like an animal huffing and puffing, make filtered Instagram pictures or pick up chicks then go for it.

Why KB?

Why KB?

Somehow the fitness industry became the beauty industry

Progression

Why in yoga, why not in training ?

WHY KB?

So why KB? A question I regularly get asked is why KB? And the even worse question I regularly get asked is can I purchase some personal training with you to get fit, but I don’t want to hurl around those kettlebell thingies(yes people will actually ask this question, as if kettlebell lifting doesn’t somehow manage to get you fit, AND seriously WTF is wrong with some people?).

So firstly, I don’t hurl an iron ball around for hurling an iron balls sake. I do it because there’s certain qualities I get out of it. It’s not dancing or art therapy. The qualites are for mind/body, sports performance and physique. Of course we can mix KB lifting up with other training methods, but that’s for blogs to come. This blog is kettlebell specific, so let’s get to school plebs..

Kettle-What?

Kettle-What?

So, I was a personal trainer and I think I saw a Youtube video of people doing kettlebells. This then quickly escalated into me going to a Kettle Bell workshop. In retrospect, the workshop wasn’t that good, what I mean by that is that is it was just ‘hard work’. There was nothing about technique or the detail of lifting - which is really what it’s all about.

Being Vs. Being a Wannabe

Being Vs. Being a Wannabe

I know Fitbits are fun and everything but maybe you want to get rid of them. Ok, it’s not just Fitbits I’m getting at it’s all the counting that goes along with exercise - more accurately outcome-oriented exercise. Counting calories, counting steps….in order to get to a ‘better you’.
